Your dryer is tumbling. You can hear it running. But the clothes come out cold, or barely warm, and definitely not dry. That’s a different problem than a dryer that won’t start at all, and it usually comes down to one of a small number of components: some you can safely check yourself in a few minutes, and some that genuinely require a technician.
If your dryer runs but doesn’t heat, the cause is almost always one of these:
Three quick checks (cycle setting, breaker/gas valve, lint screen, and vent) rule out the simplest causes in a few minutes. Beyond that, the components involved carry either electrical or gas risk, and testing them properly requires a multimeter and, on gas units, specialized safety knowledge.
First, Is This Safe to Keep Using Right Now?
Before troubleshooting anything, check for these signs. If any apply, stop using the dryer and don’t run another cycle until it’s inspected:
A dryer that’s simply not heating is an inconvenience. A dryer showing any of the signs above is a different situation. Restricted airflow combined with lint buildup is a leading cause of home dryer fires, and continuing to run cycles while that’s happening is the wrong move. 3 Checks You Can Safely Do Yourself First
These take a few minutes and don’t require opening the dryer’s cabinet.
Check the cycle and temperature setting
It sounds obvious, but it’s the single most common false alarm. If the dryer is set to “Air Fluff,” “Air Dry,” “No Heat,” or a similar cycle, it will tumble without producing any heat by design. Check the cycle selector before assuming something is broken.
Check the circuit breaker or gas supply
Electric dryers need a 240-volt supply, which typically runs through a double-pole breaker in your panel. If one side of that breaker has tripped, the dryer can still power on and tumble using the other leg, but it won’t have enough power to run the heating circuit. Reset the breaker once. If it trips again immediately, stop; that’s an electrical fault, not a dryer problem. You should keep testing yourself.
Gas dryers need an open gas supply valve and, if you’re on propane, a tank that isn’t empty. Confirm the valve behind the dryer is fully open and that other gas appliances in the home are working normally.
Check the lint screen and exhaust vent
A clogged lint screen or a restricted exhaust duct reduces airflow through the drum. When airflow drops enough, the drum can overheat and trip a thermal safety cutoff, which shuts down heating to protect the dryer, producing a “not heating” symptom that isn’t actually about the heating element or igniter failing yet.
Pull the lint screen out and clean it thoroughly, including a wipe-down of the housing it sits in, not just the screen itself. Then check that the exhaust duct behind the dryer isn’t crushed, kinked, or disconnected. A visual check on the type of screen and duct won’t catch everything, but it rules out the most common airflow issue quickly.
If none of these three checks resolve it, the cause is inside the dryer, and which component depends on whether you have an electric or gas model.
If It’s an Electric Dryer: What’s Likely Failing
An electric dryer that tumbles but produces no heat has one of three components at fault in the large majority of cases.
Heating element
The heating element is the coil that actually generates heat as current passes through it. When it fails completely, you get no heat at all. When it fails partially, such as with a hairline crack or a section of coil with reduced output, you may get some warmth but not enough to dry clothes in a normal cycle. Element failure is diagnosed with a continuity test using a multimeter; a coil that shows no continuity is open and needs replacement.
Thermal fuse
The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device. It trips permanently if the drum exceeds a safe temperature and does not reset; once blown, it has to be replaced. A blown thermal fuse cuts power to the heating circuit, so the dryer runs but produces no heat, which looks identical to a failed heating element from the outside.
Here’s the important part: a thermal fuse doesn’t blow on its own. It blows because something caused the drum to overheat, most often restricted airflow. Replacing the fuse without finding and fixing what caused it to blow means the replacement fuse will blow again, sometimes within the next few cycles.
Cycling thermostat
The cycling thermostat regulates temperature by cycling the heating element on and off to keep the drum within its target range. A thermostat stuck in the “off” position will prevent heating even though the element itself is fine. This is less common than element or fuse failure but is tested the same way, for continuity, in its closed and open states.
If It’s a Gas Dryer: What’s Likely Failing
Gas dryers use a burner assembly instead of a heating element, so the failure points are different.
Igniter
The igniter is a ceramic element that glows red-hot to light the gas burner at the start of each heating cycle. A weakened or broken igniter either fails to glow hot enough to ignite the gas, or doesn’t glow at all. This is the most common single cause of a gas dryer that tumbles but produces no heat.
Radiant flame sensor
The flame sensor confirms the burner has actually ignited. If it fails, the control system may shut off gas flow as a safety measure even if the igniter is working, because it can’t confirm combustion occurred. The symptom looks the same as an igniter failure from the outside: the dryer runs, the burner briefly attempts to fire, then nothing.
Gas valve coil assembly
The valve coils control the flow of gas to the burner. When they fail, gas doesn’t flow even if the igniter glows correctly. Because this component involves the gas supply directly, testing and replacing it is not a DIY task; it requires someone comfortable working with gas appliances safely.
A note on gas dryer safety: if you ever smell gas near the dryer, that’s a different and more urgent situation than a no-heat symptom. Turn off the gas supply valve, ventilate the area, and don’t attempt to test or repair anything until the situation is resolved.

A proper diagnosis tests each suspect component individually: element continuity, thermal fuse integrity, thermostat operation on electric models; igniter, flame sensor, and valve coils on gas models, rather than guessing and replacing the most expensive part first.
